As the header already told you, my name is Wyatt Pokorny, and I’m a young novelist and Tolkien Fanatic. This is my blog: You’ll hear me talk about chess, language learning, Zelda, fantasy / sci-fi literature, my own books and short stories, and of course, above you’ll hear all of the fun stuff I come up with about Tolkien.
I am currently 13 years of age (as of June 2023). I was born in Scotland, and have parents from both Canada and the Czech Republic. I live in Nova Scotia, returning to see my Czech family in the summer. I am hopelessly obsessed with all things Tolkien; I have, like many others, taken on the difficult (yet very rewarding) endeavor of learning Quenya and Sindarin. I currently have an online chess ELO of approximately 1500, though I hope to register with FIDE for a proper rating soon.
Following are my opinions on some of the major disputes within the Tolkien fandom:
- Balrogs do not have wings
- We do not in fact know who or what Tom Bombadil is, and there is no use speculating
- The Middle-Earth legendarium contains no allegorical content
- The LotR movies are acceptable, as most of their changes to the original were either minor or more or less necessary
- The Hobbit movies are disgusting; I’m never watching them again if I don’t have to
- Rings of Power did not get the lore ENTIRELY right, however,
- it is still a good show, exemplifying Tolkien’s core themes and values,
- thus it is still an acceptable adaptation. For more information, see my article on this subject.
- The rules of Quenya and Sindarin are perfectly useable, and as long as you aren’t publishing massive novels in them, copyright problems should not arise
- The Eagles are not a plot hole (see my article)
And in the chess world:
- Lichess is better than chess.com
- Hans is a cheater, and his lawsuit is doomed to fail
- Nobody cares about Ding and Nepo; Magnus is still World Champion and will be until he loses it or retires
- Black and White should be played the same way; White has no advantage
